Since coming out of retirement to race for the Stan’s NoTubes Women’s Elite Mountain Bike Team in its inaugural season in 2011, Nina keeps finding more motivation on the mountain bike thanks to her stellar comrades and amazing team support. Amongst several noticeable results over the last few years on the team, 2013 added some ProXCT podium finishes and another National Champion’s jersey, this time in the Solo 24Hour category. Credit for her success goes not only to the fantastic energy created by this great team, but also to the junior athletes she coaches for Get Out! New Mexico, which also enjoyed its inaugural season in 2011. As coach and director for Get Out! NM, she rides on a daily basis with eight juniors aged 13 to 18, which keeps her on her toes and has earned Get Out! a national title at the 2011 US Mountain Bike Championships, a silver medal at the 2012 US Cyclocross National Championships, and most recently, the tightly contested junior team national title at the 2013 24-Hour Mountain Bike National Championships.
In her 12-year career as a pro mountain biker, Nina has been the US Collegiate Mountain Bike Champion in cross-country and short track for the UNM Lobos (2004). Racing for the Cannondale Mountain Bike Team from 2005 to 2009, she competed on the European World Cup circuit in 2007, and finished in the top ten on the US National Mountain Bike Series in 2008 and 2009. She has been a 5-time New Mexico state mountain bike champion, and 3-time NM Cyclocross state champion. More recently she won the 24-Hour National Championships in the Mixed Duo category in 2012, and earned another stars-and-stripes jersey in her Masters category at the 2014 U.S. National Cyclocross Championships last month.
For 2014, Nina looks forward to representing the Stan’s NoTubes Women’s Elite Mountain Bike Team at the early ProXCT rounds before switching focus to endurance events including 24-Hour Nationals, Marathon Nationals, the Whiskey Off-Road, and perhaps a few mountain bike stage races, while continuing to coach the next generation of NM cyclists to have fun and be fast.
