It’s no secret, Kathy LOVES her bike and it’s also no doubt that her bike has seen her through a lot of challenges. In the 12 years since Kathy started racing, she has raced MTB Cross Country, MTB Short Track, MTB Super D, Cyclocross, Road, Track, MTB stage races, 24-Hour MTB races and even MTB Enduro racing!
After earning a B.A. at the University of Washington in Seattle Kathy moved to Utah to get a taste of summer mountain biking and winter skiing. While working as the Human Resources Manager at Deer Valley Resort she watched the NORBA circuit come through each summer and decided to try racing. And, when she won her first beginner race she was instantly hooked! Just a few short years later, she landed her first pro contract and quit her job to give racing and training her full attention.
Over the years as she fell in love with racing and became a consistent Top 10 finisher on the US National mountain bike circuit she competed on the European MTB World Cup circuit in Germany, Scotland and Belgium. Since then Kathy has been a 3-time Utah State Mountain Bike Champion and 2-time Utah State Cyclocross Champion.
It wasn’t long before she discovered a passion for Cyclocross. She enjoyed many UCI podiums racing “Cross” before life came to a screeching halt when she lost both parents 8 weeks apart in late 2009. Deciding to push forward and continue to pursue her passion she persevered, climbing on the podium numerous times and capping off the season by placing 4th at the US Cyclocross National Championships!! She followed that up during the mountain bike season placing 4th at the US MTB Short Track National Championships!
Her 2011 cyclocross season was sprinkled with a handful of UCI podium appearances and many Top 10s along with a trip to the Czech Republic to compete in two Cyclocross UCI World Cups. Sadly her season came to a quick end in December when her husband of 14 years was diagnosed with stage 3 kidney cancer. Life was riddled with confusion and worry but the things that were always there for her were her husband’s support, her Stan’s NoTubes team standing by during the toughest time of her life, and her bike.
Her husband’s kidney was removed in January and in March Kathy landed full time work in marketing back at Deer Valley Resort where she has worked for 18 years. Not wanting to give into the uncertainty and chaos of the ups and downs of cancer, with Stan’s NoTubes support she continued to push her limits racing mountain bikes and “training” when her mind and body would allow. Kathy ended the mtb and cyclocross season with 6 wins and 17+ podiums. And just to prove she could still do it, in July she took home another medal at the US MTB National Championships in Super D… on her Cannondale Flash 29 hardtail!
Kathy loves to give back to the sport that has given her everything. She currently holds a USA Cycling Level III coaching license and has had the opportunity to work with men, women and children to help them meet their goals. Speaking in front of groups comes naturally to Kathy and she has spoken throughout the years at Rotary Clubs, elementary schools and even at a high school while racing World Cups in the Czech Republic! She also holds cyclocross and mountain bike cycling clinics for all levels and ages. And, just to really make sure she isn’t slacking, she sits on the Board of Advisors for the Utah High School Mountain Bike League in hopes of sharing the joy mountain biking with high school athletes.
