There is one thing for sure and that is Kathy LOVES to race! She has raced MTB Cross Country, MTB Short Track, Super D, Cyclocross, Road, Track, MTB and road stage races, 24-Hour MTB races and even Enduro races!
After earning a B.A. at the University of Washington Kathy moved to Utah to get a taste of summer mountain biking and winter skiing. While working as the Human Resources Manager at Deer Valley Resort she watched the NORBA circuit come through each summer and decided to try racing. And, when she won her first beginner race she was instantly hooked! Just a few short years later, she landed her first pro contract and quit her job to give racing and training her full attention. Over the years she became a consistent Top 10 finisher on the national mountain bike circuit and even competed on the European World Cup circuit in Germany, Scotland and Belgium.
During this time she discovered a passion for Cyclocross. Kathy enjoyed many UCI podiums racing “cross” before life came to a screeching halt when she lost both parents 8 weeks apart in 2009. Deciding to push forward and continue to pursue her passion she persevered climbing on the podium numerous times and capped off the season placing 4th at the US Cyclocross National Championships. This was followed up by placing 4th at the US MTB Short Track National Championships in 2011!
Her 2011 cyclocross season was sprinkled with a handful of UCI podium appearances and many Top 10’s along with a trip to the Czech Republic to compete in Cyclocross World Cups. Sadly her season came to a quick end in December when her husband of 14 years was diagnosed with Stage 3 Kidney Cancer and had to have his Kidney removed.
A few months later she landed full time work in Marketing back at Deer Valley Resort. But not wanting to give into the uncertainty and chaos of the ups and downs of cancer, with her husband’s and Stan’s NoTubes support she continued to push her limits racing mountain bikes and even competing in new disciplines. Last season with very limited training she chalked up 6 wins and had 17 podiums including a 5th place in Super D at the US National Championships!!
Kathy finds it important to give back to the sport that has given her everything. When not on the bike she also helps with cycling clinics for all levels and shares her passion for cycling by speaking to various groups. In addition, she sits on the Board of Advisors for the Utah High School Mountain Bike League in hopes of sharing the joy mountain biking with high school athletes.
Kathy is very grateful for all the love and support of her team, sponsors, family and friends as she has struggled to battle along with her husband to fight what is now Stage IV cancer. She will continue to push her limits on the cyclocross bike and in life!
